Cathy Habermann is the creative genius behind HandsOn Design. She used to be half of Cherrywood Studios... so you'll see some of her previous work available closer to the bottom of this page.
Cherrywood is no longer designing, so these featured patterns are our last remaining inventory. HandsOn has colorful designs -- and you'll recognize Cathy's color sense and finishing talents in the new designs!
Hands On Design is beginning a new set of designs to celebrate Coffee!!! Nine single 1/2-Sheet full color charts, each finishes approx 4 inches square on 32ct linen. Each chart is available individually, and you can stitch these individually, but there IS a simple border chart (on the Hands On website) that guides you in stitching them together into one (235 x 237) 14 x 14 square.
Coded for DMC, they are fresh and fun. The first three designs of the nine are available now.. the other six to follow in two more shipments (May and July). We have an auto-ship for them, in case you want to collect the whole set.
Hands-On Design Announces 12 Days of Christmas Ornaments for 2017!
Beginning this mid-January, Partridges and Doves -- the first two of 12 ornaments of the set -- will release together in one chart. (The remaining 5 charts of 10 designs will release each month after that, to finish this July.) A DARLING set this year, each is stitched on Weeks Dye Works hand-dyed 28ct Aztec Red Gingham Linen, and finishes approx 3 or 4 inches in size. Garnished with a few Just Another Button Company buttons, the aged-red color background will really show up well on your Christmas tree!
Get your fabric all at one time (so dye lots match) or gather it all along with each chart. 2 Skeins of each floss are needed for the entire set: DMC 738, GAST Carriage Black, Chives, Cornhusk, Mulberry, Old Brick; and Weeks Chestnut, Grits, and Whiskey. We're beginning an auto-ship for charts, buttons and fabrics... let us know your choices!
Good Ship Sampler
*There are good ships and wood ships and ships that sail the sea, but the best ships are friendships, may they always be.* A nice verse with really cute nautical motifs garnishing it.
Two different patterns in the chart, the main piece finishes approx 9 x 6-1/2, and the smaller is just a skinny 1-1/2 x 8. Coded for Gentle Art Sampler Threads, DMC or Romy's Creations hand-dyeds.
A 4-seasons companion to Thyme to Gather, this is stitched on Weeks 32ct Dolphin and Linen Linens, using hand-dyed flosses.
The chart comes with a bit of Lady Dot rick rack and three brass bells. Stitch both parts and join them together, or just the motifs -- your chouce!
The first in a 4-part seasonal series by Chalk Artist Priscilla Blain, Cathy will be doing all the seasons this same size (approx 8 x 10) on a 32ct deep slate fabric. There are several counts of linen and aida available now in this neat dark gray color, so you have options... but I'd get all 4 cuts at one time, if you are going to do the set.
Very cheerful, each is stitched with hand-dyed flosses, and will feature a word in the design -- NOT the season -- the season will be spelled out in a separate word.
Hands On is beginning a set of 6 pin cushion blocks -- each with a different theme, and a wool topping decoration treatment.
The first one... HOME is a 4-1/2 inch block that is stitched on 5 sides. A few flowers on the top, all the sides are decorated with different houses. There is a small piece of Weeks Dye Works hand-dyed wool included with the chart that tops the center of the block -- visible in the picture.
WOOL is #2 in the set -- HOME is the first. Over-the-top cute, this is a 4 x 4 x 2-1/2 cube cushion that is stitched on 5 sides. Each of the 4 sides shows little wooly sheep from each of their four directions (so it is different on every side).
THEN, you can get the optional set of JABCO pins to poke in there -- this one says HOME!
We're offering the charts separately from the linen and pin sets, to give you all the choices here! Amazingly, it uses quite a bit of fabric -- if you use 3-inches around all the pieces, a fat quarter is the most economical way to go. Please note: we offer the chart, pins and fabric all separately, but are sending all of the auto-ships with the chartpak and pins.
(Note: when you order an auto-ship, it will show up on your order form as a "zero-cost" or $.01 item, as we won't charge your credit card until we ship.)
Thyme to Gather
Grab some Tiger Eye and Parchment linens by Weeks (just choose the same count for both pieces) and a few hand-dyed threads and get this baby FINISHED!
Along with the chart for the 4 x 6-ish mini-pillow, you get extra goodies to spruce it up a little. A delicious double acorn charm, some burlap ribbon, striped string and wool felt to cut out those oak leaves you see sticking out from the top!!! (See the acorns up there and the string?) Just a fun design to remind you to gather acorns on your evening Autumn walks!
The Chalkboard Ornaments Collection
Hands On's collection of nine designs is now complete.... a trio of small charts, each is stitched with Sampler Threads on 30 or 32ct Gunmetal Linen. This set of three collections will offer you 9 ornaments in all -- all varying sizes. Along with the chart, Cathy has included 6 pre-cut green felt holly leaves and three red button berries to decorate your ornaments.
Be Jolly, Be Merry and Believe -- each will fit on a 9 x 9 cut of fabric, and if you are VERY careful and frugal with your fabric, I think you'll be able to get all 9 out a fat quarter (18 x 27) cut. To play it safe, a fat third will give you the nine 9 x 9 cuts you might want. We have Aida as well as linen fabric options open to you, and we've started an auto-ship on the charts.
Hands On To The Beach!
Hands On has 4 designs out so far in a cute 12-part series of *Beachy Thoughts!* Presented in 5-1/2 x 8 inch card format, each design finishes approx 4 x 6 on 32ct, and uses a dusty color palette of Gentle Art Sampler Threads. (Coded for DMC as well.)
Cute as can be, choose just one or two, or collect the entire set. Fun to finish as little stand-up door-stop bricks, maybe 4 together in a pillow... a lonnnggg skinny picture to hang above a doorway???
Introducing Chalk Squared!
from Just Another Button Company and Hands-On Design
JABCO and Hands On Design have announced their 2016 Chalk Series for Cross Stitch. Quite involved with different finishing choices this year, you can stitch JUST the central square -- *Each moment of the year has its own beauty.* or you can make it the central part of the larger piece.
There are 12 little parts coming monthly that you can finish in individual candle pans (make them magnets or whatever) OR you can stitch those right onto the larger piece. THEN, of course, there are button sets each month... so we have TONS of details for you!
***A Moment in Chalk -- OK... this is the central design of the series. You can stitch just IT (135 x 135 stitch count) on the 30 or 32ct Gunmetal Weeks Linen (8-1/2 or 9 inches square when finished) with hand-dyed Gentle Art Sampler Threads. OR, you can stitch it in the center of the larger piece -- 317 x 317 stitches, that will finish 20 to 21 inches in size -- depending on whether you use 30 or 32ct linen. That larger scrolling border is included in this first chart.
***Individual Calendar Florals -- These will release each month -- the smaller charts. Jan, Feb and March have now arrived. You'll need 9 x 9 cuts of linen for each and a little 4-inch white enameled candle pan -- if you stitch them individually. If you add them onto your main 317 x 317 piece, the first chart will tell you where they go (no candle pans needed then).
***Enameled Candle Pans ***Finishing Kits for the Candle Pans... keeps your needlework stretched and puffed perfectly to place in that little pan.
***Button Packs for each Calendar Floral -- we are offering these together with the charts, but prices will vary each month -- per JABCO.
***Linen is Week's 32ct Gunmetal. Last year's set used a 1/2 yd cut of 30ct. If you still have that left -- you can USE IT! It'll change your total design area by 1/15th of an inch every inch. Basically it won't matter much for the finished pieces -- not enough to buy new linen anyway! Regular Moment in Chalk will need a 15 x 15 cut. Huge conglomerate project will need a -- 26 x 26 cut. Each month's design will need an 8 x 8-ish sized piece... that's a fat half yard.
***Threads: Tropical Ocean, (3) Grasshopper, Rhubarb, Melon Patch, Huckleberry, Aged Pewter,Harvest Moon, Geranium, (6) Chalk, Buttercrunch, Sweet Petunia, Wood Smoke, Shutter Green, Green Apple ($52.50) and a bit of black DMC.
***BACK BOARD for Middle Design -- A gorgeous soft blue whitewashed and distressed finish, you can see the shaped edges peeking out from behind the main Moment In Chalk design -- if you stitch JUST it.
So Stitchers.... We suggest a phone call to consult about fabric sizes, which way you want to do this set... pans vs fabric, finishing kits vs not... whew! Dropdown options are for individual projects on 30ct.
Kiss-A-Bit and Merry-Berry
The Square-ology gals have a pair of new designs to help with the Christmas mood! This set of designs is presented in card format with the clay button embellishment. You get 1/4 of the design, and then pivot it 90 degrees to repeat it over and over until you get it finsihed. EXCEPT the Bit -- which is just a stand-alone design.
Confused? Don't worry about it. 30ct Weeks Gunmetal Linen, bits of hand-dyed floss... the fob finishes 2 x 2, the Merry Berry wreath is only 4 x 4. Very pretty!
Another cute block pin cushion to companion Stitching By The Sea! I think this must be a 4-Seasons Set in the works -- we have Summer and Winter now! Worked on 28ct Hazelnut linen, it calls for hand-dyeds of Hunter, Bluecoat Blue, Chalk, Ohio Lemon Pie, Evergreen and Banker's Gray. Trimmed with gigantic Sunshine Yellow rik-rak trim by Dames of the Needle, it is garnished with a matching set of pins by Just Another Button Company.
Excellent finishing instructions are included in the chart -- 10 pictures of the process! You'll need a 16 x 16 cut of fabric as well as a 13 x 13. If you are frugal, you can get by with a 1/4 yard cut -- 18 x 27.
Give Thanks for this Day
A sweet chart to stitch on a yummy color of fabric, this has a stitch count of 53 x 62.
Apple Cider, Blackboard, Monkey Grass and Oatmeal Sampler Threads are the featured colors.
Bumble Bits -- Square*ology!
A pair of cute new Square-ology charts have arrived -- a small bee fob design and a Bumble Bouquet. Offered as the small charts with the button smattering, there is a darling new JABCO bee featured on these. Part of the Square-ology Series by Hands On Design and Just Another Button Company... you might not want all in the sets so far... but some of these are REALLY stunning little designs! They are all pin cushion or fob sized as well. Offered as the chart with 'Square Bits' -- the buttons!
Square-ology from JABCO and Hands On Design
You've probably seen lots of advertising for this new series of small patterns... Basically, they are 4-card sets of coordinating designs -- each offered with a small embellishment packet. What makes them a bit different is the chart presentation. Each design is presented as ONE-FOURTH of the total charted design. (except one! So try to keep that straight!!!) You stitch the design, and then rotate the chart to continue stitching the other 3 corners of the piece. Don't get lost in all those directions... you'll see when you get these that they are fun and very easy.
Each chart comes individually with a beautiful picture of the finished piece on the front, along with its cute embellishments. We are promised a new set of 4 designs every other month! Since there are 4 in here... and embellishments... we are not putting everything on auto-ship -- we are leaving chart choices up to you!!!!
Stitching By The Sea
Stitching By The Sea is a fun pin cushion tucked inside it's very own stitched basket! Worked on Weeks 30ct Tin Roof, the basket measures approx 3 x 3 x 2, and is stitched on all 4 sides and the bottom -- can you see the waves and some of the little fish? Then, the beach cabanas and sea gulls decorate the pin cushion. That wonderful set of seaside pins is offered separately -- from Just Another Button Company.
Complete finishing instructions are included for the basket and cushion. Cute and different -- wouldn't it be fun to BE stitching in those little cabanas by the sea?????
Stitch Every Day
Hands On has the cutest sign that needs to hang above your stitching chair... or adorning the door to your stitching room -- if you are lucky enough to have one! OR... you could finish it into a drum pin cushion... and poke that fun Stitch Lolly in the top.
Stitched over two on 30ct Weeks Chickpea hand-dyed linen with over-dyed flosses, it finishes approx 5 x 11, so if you roll it into the drum, it'll be about 5 inches high by 3-ish inches wide. A fun, bold design, it is offered as the chart with great finishing instructions included. The Stitch Lolly from Just Another Button Company is available separately.
The Spring version in this 4-seasons set of designs -- this companions Winter Solstice and Twice Blessed. Like the others it is a set of smaller pin cushions that comes in chart format. Cathy has added some wool *dots* -- precut circles to use for the penny-rug decoration on here -- if you don't want to stitch those.
Very pretty and colorful, another nice set of patterns to "bowl fill!"
Oh Bee Hive
Oh this is fun! A pin cushion, needlebook and needlepark! (which is a fun word I have never heard!) Choose Weeks Dye Works Seafoam linen -- or a light blue -- and a few hand-dyed flosses, the main cushion finishes about 5-1/2 inches square, while the two companions are smaller at 3 x 3. Cathy's chart includes 7 small wool 'hexies' -- precut shapes that you see below the hive. Match some rik-rak -- this is Sunny Side Up by Dames of the Needle... and then get the set of bee pins by JABCO, and your hives are so cute!!!!!!
At the Beach
*Close your eyes and pretend you're at the beach* Just a sweet little piece... the blues in the water are Presidential Blue, Bluecoat Blue, Blue Jay, Island Breeze and Morning Glory. I just love that color block shading.
Finishing approx 4 x 7-1/2, maybe you have some cool charms or buttons you could add to this?! Fish bubbles are Smyrna Crosses... but they could be beads!
A Year in Chalk -- They're All Here!
Cathy Habermann released a set of 12 charts, which have now all arrived. Finishing approx 3 x 4-5/8 each, they are fun monthly designs that look like they are hand-drawn just like the chalk-art that is so popular right now. They are worked with Gentle Art's CHALK color of hand-dyed floss -- along with another pastel color each month -- to accent the artwork a little. (January calls for Tropical Ocean, Feb uses Tea Rose, March calls for Avocado, and April uses Ohio Lemon Pie, May is Mistletoe, June is WoodRose, July is Geranium, august is Sunflower, September is Lemon Drop, October is Carrot, November is Gingersnap and December calls for Schoolhouse Red. You MAY want a skein for Chalk for each month... but maybe not!!! )
Weeks Dye Works 30ct Gunmetal Linen is the fabric of choice for this series... it mimics an old blackboard!
Picture This Plus's 14ct Shadow Aida is the Aida option.
The companion to Twice Blessed, Cathy is halfway through a 4-seasons set of these charming small designs. Each pair of cushions is stitched on a bold color of hand-dyed linen and garnished with either some wool rounds to resemble a penny rug -- or your stitching to look that way.
Offered in a small chart format, you get the small wools with the chart. Twice Blessed had acorns, Winter Solstice features cozy cabins on a cold winter night!
Pomegranate Pocket and Pincushion
Hands On Design has lots of new things... Pomegranate P & P is REAL CUTE... and is her Show Special from our Fall Trade Show! You'll need 30ct Aztec Red Weeks hand-dyed linen and a pretty finishing fabric to make this case... it uses just 4 colors of hand-dyed floss. The main case features a band of rick rack -- do you see it? It's garnished with cute Lazy Daisies, French Knots and Straight Stitches -- it reminds me of a caterpillar!!!
The matching pin cushion is a SQUARE cube shape. When you see the shape of the chart, you'll instantly see how it fits together. Unusual colors, this is just a lovely set of pieces!! Offered as a chart. MAKE SURE to see the rest of Cathy's new things -- the acorns are darling and there is a cute Halloween piece!
Wreath House * Twice Blessed * Blissfully Unaware
Here's a duo of Hands On's new things! Each one is so darn cute!!!
Inspired by Polish Pottery patterns and hand-dyed indigo cottons, Cathy designed this sampler and the coordinating 5-pointed star pin cushion! The star is what fascinates me -- there are 8 different rectangular panels offered - choose 5 of the patterns for your star. She has you actually CUT right through some of your stitching... that is part of the reason why it looks like old scraps of fabric -- cut where-ever!
The main sampler is stitched with Weeks navy floss and finishes approx 7 x 7. The star is also Navy, and finishes under 5 x 5. Offered as a chart with assembly instructions.
This is a really striking piece with a wonderful sentiment. The borders are really cool -- different sized triangles all around -- you COULD do them in Satins. Next are all the greenery vines and little red flowers. The leaves COULD be done with more Satins -- they would resemble Hardanger Embroidery. Then, notice the border of checkerboarded triangles surrounding the center verse??? Those are worked in Smyrna Crosses! (You could do those in crosses as well!)
Offered as a chart, this finishes 11 x 12 on 32ct and is worked with Pecan Pie, Gold Leaf, Moss, Claret, Briar Rose and Oatmeal hand-dyeds. If you don't have time to stitch the entire piece -- go for that smaller option across the top. It has all the striking features of the larger piece -- 200 x 60 in stitch size.
'It's always Spring in...' or 'Love Blooms in' Grandma's Garden! This is a pair of sweet designs offered in the same chart pack. Love Blooms is the featured design -- it is worked on Week's Dye Works Light Khaki Linen with Cottage Blue Sampler Threads.
The pack contains the bit of coordinating Week's Houndstooth wool you see on the pynpillow along with Dames of the Needle's hand-dyed rik rak and twill tape trims. There are even 7 blue buttons in here to match everything! It's always spring is charted, but there are not wool pieces or it's charm in here. (But we can match that... AND we carry the tiny Made-with-love charms open stock!)
Gather Friends Close Set 1 of 3
WOW... this is a cute set of designs! Hands on Designs' Cathy Habermann (who used to design under Cherrywood Studios) is introducing this neat set of nine pincushions. BUT... if you are not into little pillows... she has them charted for a larger pillow or framed piece. The cover shows nine small designs. Offered in three parts... part one offers the three designs on the left-hand side. Part Two will offer the *Friends* trio of three pillows (arranged vertically in the center of the grouping.) Part Three contains the three small designs on the right-hand side of the nine.
Now... LOOK at the finishing. Every tiny pin cushion is constructed a bit differently... and all feature the most charming, retro-flavored fabrics. YOU GET THOSE FINISHING FABRICS! All are stitched on Weeks 30ct hand-dyed Honeysuckle Linen with DMC floss. Your chart contains its three designs, PLUS the finishing fabrics, PLUS the hand-dyed rik-raks and buttons shown! If you don't want to make the tiny cushions, Cathy has integrated the trims into the main medley of designs. A fat quarter of the Weeks linen will be plenty for all nine designs. I just love them all!!!!!
Love My Stitching
Well, this is a fun design... frame it, pillow it or follow the included instructions to make it into a cool stitching pouch! Offered as a chart, the entire design is worked in only three colors of DMC floss. If you find fun fabric for your pouch and it doesn't match -- CHANGE the COLORS of floss!!!!!!! (The Cross Stitch Police will not visit you!)
Simple and real cute, raid your embellishment stash to see what fun things you can come up with to decorate this. I love that gigantic rik-rak trim on there...chenille ball fringe would be wild!!
The Trick or Treat All Through the Year Series
Cherrywood has a neat series of 12 Halloween designs -- released in pairs over the next few months. The first is Peace, Love... Always a larger and smaller design... always stitched on Week's hand-dyed linens using Crescent's flosses and Week's wools to finish, and JABCO button embellishments... this set is AWESOME! We saw and photographed all the models for the entire series at our Spring trade show a few months ago -- with the strict rules that we would not share pics ahead of time!!!
The Cherrywood gals have really done a nice job with this set -- cute, unique and unusual designs, GREAT finishing suggestions, wonderful colors -- all offered as charts. I think you'll be pleased with what is in store for you!!! Peace Love and Candy corn stitches up to be 5 x 7. The little wool banner/rug/mat trimmed with wool candy corns measures approx 9 x 11. The set of 6 charts releases every month-ish, and finished in October. If you want the linens, wools, buttons or threads... write your wants into the box below!
