Yummy New Velveteen Finishing Fabric from Dames of the Needle Yummy New Velveteen Finishing Fabric
We have 5 new colors of this dreamy backing fabric for your stitching projects. By Dames of the Needle, it is hand-dyed velveteen -- beautifully and softly dyed -- the overall feel of the fabric is heavy compared to cotton finishing materials. We have torn it into fat 1/8 yard cuts -- approx 10 x 17 in size -- so enough for a larger pillow or plenty for lots of smaller sewing case linings, pin cushion backings, box and tray liners, even the bottoms of pretty wooden bases and boxes.

VERY pretty, the new colors (shown from left to right) are Red Begonia, Dried Acorn, Dried Wine, Smashing Jack and Puff's Magic. Get 'em and even split these cuts with friends in your stitch group -- little pin cushions don't need much!

Luscious Hand-dyed Cotton Velveteen for Finishing
Luscious Hand-dyed Cotton Velveteen for Finishing from Dames of the Needle Dames of the Needle has been busy dying wonderful, rich and soft cotton velveteen for you to use on the backs of your pin cushions! Use this where you would use any finishing fabric -- sewing cases, small pillows, it is *just the right weight* to make everything feel substantial. Hand-dyed, I chose Elizabeth's softer colors that go with so many of the hand-dyed flosses everyone uses. Her colors are not blotchy -- they are just dreamy, dusty and rich -- put lizard litter inside your cushion and put this on the back and you will never want to put it down!

Presented in 14 x 17-ish cuts. We have 11 colors. I have given *SORT OF MATCHES* to thread colors for you. THESE ARE NOT EXACT MATCHES... but I wanted to give you some idea of the shades each has
  • Aged Saffron -- Weeks Whiskey or Chickpea
  • Baby Seal -- Weeks River Rock
  • Colonial Tea -- Weeks Sand
  • Dirty Ewe -- Weeks Cattail or Conch
  • Dirty Khaki -- Weeks Tarragon or Pamlico and GAST Lexington Green
  • Faded Bell Bottom Blues -- Weeks Dolphin
  • Lush Meadow -- Weeks Collards
  • Sea Cap -- Weeks Dolphin or Jaybird and GAST Crystal Lake
  • Sweeny Red -- Weeks Merlot
  • Tarnished Halo -- Weeks Gold
  • Texarkana Sage --- Weeks Cornsilk.

Flag & Flowers Tall Drum from Dames of the Needle Flag & Flowers Tall Drum
Dames of the Needle has several cute new designs -- Flag and Flowers is just one. A funky striped urn nestled among a tattered flag, all three designs are different, but definitely coordinate. Offered as two different charts, the larger 3 x 5-inch standing stuffed drum comes in one, the hornbook and bitty fob/cushion in the other.

Worked on Week's 35ct Straw Linen with Mascara, Whiskey, Otter Creek, Deep Forest, Endive, Raspberry Frost, Sea Spray, Uniform Blue, Weathered Barn, Cidermill Brown, Parchment and Country Redwood hand-dyeds, the colors are super dusty and pretty.

Stitching on the drum is really 12 x 5... but it rolls up into about 3 x 5... while the hornbook (can be worked on 35 or 36ct Straw) finishes 3 x 4-1/2 and the little fob/cushion is just 2 x 2. More descriptions about the Hornbook are shown below.

Flag and Flowers from Dames of the Needle - click for more Flag and Flowers
Oh, this is a delightful little design by Elizabeth Talledo. You get two parts -- one fits a 3-1/4 x 4-3/4 inch hornbook, the other is a matching scissor fob or ornament. Offered as a small chart, you'll need bits (around 4 x 4 and 6 x 6 -- just bits -- we're going to find you bits in our bolt of fabric, so both will be less than $5) of Week's 35ct Straw Linen and 12 shades of Sampler Threads for these, and a package of Elizabeth's hand-dyed black mini Pom-Pom trim.

I don't know if you can see it all in the picture, but you'll Nun-stitch the edging and add those little balls around the edges. A very pretty floral urn surrounded with a lovely, dusty-shaded American Flag. Very pretty!

Paul Revere Hornbook from Dames of the Needle Paul Revere Hornbook
Wow... both sides of this are stitched, and they both open up to reveal wool needle pages underneath. (You could get TWO hornbooks, then none of your stitching is ever laying hidden on a backside!!!) Presented as a chart, both 4 x 5-ish designs are worked on Week's 35 (or 36ct) Straw Linen with 17 different shades of hand-dyed floss. Each is Nun-Stitched around the edges for close finishing.

Sewn onto the wooden board with buttons, you're going to need to drill some holes in the wood if that is how you choose to finish these. Untie the cording at the bottom button to lift your stitching to find the cut of Week's Camel (color) wool that could hold stray needles.

Quaker Flowers Hornbook and Pin Cushion from Dames of the Needle Quaker Flowers Hornbook and Pin Cushion
Another sweet little hornbook design, this one is worked on Week's 36ct Cocoa Linen with 12 different hand-dyed floss shades. Add a bit of rik-rak or ball fringe to trim, and that little board and you're finished!

No board??? A Pin Cushion will be charming instead! Offered as a small chart.

White Pumpkins Sampler from Dames of the Needle - click for more White Pumpkins Sampler
After all the summer fruit has ripened and fallen from the vine, the white pumpkin starts to shine. It awaits it's glory in the cool days of Fall. This a really neat piece!

Unfortunately, the picture on the cover of the small chart won't show you the potential of this design. The funky little urn with its super-bold stripes and all the pumpkin vines trailing everywhere, the verse stitched over one, it finishes a petite 6 x 7 on Weeks Dye Works 36ct Cocoa Linen! I think that is another part of its charm -- it's little! Get out your Weeks and Sampler Threads of Angel Hair, Bullfrog, Caper, Carriage Black, Grasshopper, Pebble, Schneckley, Straw, Tin Roof, Wood Smoke, and Wrought Iron.

Eliza Anne Scott 1847 from Dames of the Needle - click for more Eliza Anne Scott 1847
Here's a sweet little piece -- Elizabeth has the original sampler in her private collection at home. She's adapted it a little and 'floated the alphabet and numbers' to give it more of a whimsical and relaxed feel.

Stitched on 32ct Peep's Lost Sheep Linen, it uses 19 different Weeks and Gentle Arts over-dyed flosses in its 6-1/2 x 10 inch size. A neat house, the small dogs and a few floral urns... typical sampler 'stuff and charm!'

MORE Colors of Mini Ball Trim
Elizabeth has such fun colors of her mini-ball fringe trim!
Some of these (below on the left side) are new to her line, and they join all of our others!!!

I've listed some DMC shades with the names -- none are exact matches, but they are 'close!'
All are offered in 1-yard packages, and they are not colorfast.

Brand-New Hand-Dyed Linens from Dames of the Needle - click so you can read the labels! Brand-New Hand-Dyed Linens by Dames of the Needle!
Oh my gosh, we've just opened a delicious box of hand-dyed linen by Elizabeth Talledo of Dames of the Needle. Very softly variegated, it is on the stiffer and smooth side rather than thin and ripply. A very nice feel, pretty neutral colors. I don't know what you're going to choose to stitch on it... but that's half the fun, isn't it?!

Peep's Lost Sheep is the darker one -- greenish/caramel highlights against a natural color. We're offering fat quarter (18 x 17), fat half (36 x 27) and whole yard (36 x 54)cuts!

Starry Witch from Dames of the Needle - click for more Starry Witch
Oh YUMMY! Here's a companion to Elizabeth's Moon Light Witch from last year... a 5 x 8 study of Onyx hand-dyed floss against 30ct Carrot linen. The swirly sky, the witch with neat dress, cute little owl/bat and her haunted landscape, check out the Man-in-the-Moon!

Offered as a chart, you'll need 5 skeins of Week's Onyx floss to complete this! Think about adding some black metallic to the stars and swirls and maybe some furry wool to the cat???

Windy Night from Dames of the Needle - click for more Windy Night
A charming ornament stitched on linens in the red shades, these are offered as small charts.

Windy Night *looks like* Elizabeth's ornament in last year's Just Cross Stitch Ornament Issue. It is done on 32ct Chocolate Raspberry Linen in 9 different shades of Weeks and Gentle Art flosses. I love those little wispy, leany guys... and the gorgeous pinky-red background! Both designs finish over 4 inches in size each.

Cute Minis
This is a cute set of smalls that all fit on miniature Nantucket Baskets we have! First choose your basket -- tall or small. Then choose your topper! Each small chart is worked on 35ct linen -- you'll need a 6 x 6 ish cut and comes with a bit of Elizabeth's hand-dyed rik-rak trim that you can see in the pics. She has a new line of hand-dyed trims *From the Cauldron!*

Anyway, Flower Pin includes a cut of Mild Chili 1/2 inch rik rak trim. Bird Pin Topper comes with a generous cut (my package has a full yard in it!) of Italian Custard. (Isn't that a luscious name?) The ABC HB Pin Cushion Topper and Basket Band Companion set are cute by themselves... but the HB in the name refers to a HORNBOOK design they match that was published in the January/February Issue if Just Cross Stitch Magazine. They each feature Watermelon Juice Rik Rak! Pretty darn cute... easy to stitch and finish on the precious miniature baskets... I'm sure you have threads already in your stash for these, too!

Flowers and Peacock Sampler from Dames of the Needle - click for more Flowers and Peacock Sampler
A sweet piece, this companions a hornbook project that was offered in the 2014 Just Cross Stitch Magazine's Hornbook Series of designs. It is offered as a chart, is stitched on 35ct Straw Linen and is worked in hand-dyeds of Cidermill Brown, Country Red Wood, Deep Forest, Endive, Otter Creek, Sea Spray, Raspberry Frost and Whiskey.

Finishing approx 6-1/2 x 5... it's just a petite thing full of cute fotifs -- especially those wild peacocks in the center!

Moon Light Witch from Dames of the Needle - click for more Moon Light Witch
Dames of the Needle's Elizabeth Talledo has a few new designs that are very *fun and flowing* for Halloween! All these curving lines make for lots of movement and excitement -- very eye-catching on your walls or on a couch pillow.

Moon Light Witch is worked on 30ct Weeks Carrot Hand-dyed linen in only Week's Onyx floss. No thinking with color changes and keeping track of the symbols -- just regular stitching that is so beautifully shaded because of the floss. Finishes approx 5 x 8. This compliments Elizabeth's designs that appear in the 2013 Just Cross Stitch Magazine Special Halloween and Fall Issues! OPffered as a single chart.

Three Bunnies Pick from Dames of the Needle - click for more Three Bunnies Pick
Isn't this cute? I LOVE the soft bunnies all lined up, with the long and loose backstitches. Stitched on Week's 30ct Baby's Breath Linen, this is precious!

Stitch count of only 50 x 50, the plant pick is a nice finishing idea to show off your stitching. Offered as a small chart.

Small Americana Hornbook from Dames of the Needle - click for more Small Americana Hornbook from Dames of the Needle - click for more Americana Hornbook
Originally presented as a class in 2009, this is a companion project to Elizabeth's Small Americana Hornbook chart that we already have. A neat set of things... first, you stitch the tiny over-one designs on both the front and back of the 5-inch wooden hornbook. The little buttons on there are *faux sewn*... string the thread thru the button holes, but glue them to the board.

Next, is the darling little scissor basket! It is a miniature Nantucket basket that stands 3 inches high and 2-1/2 inches in diameter at the top opening. Instructions inside to paint and Bri-wax the little basket and making the poofy insert that holds a pair of tiny scissors -- that is a Kelmscott thread ring on there and a pair of Lil Gems -- 4 or 5 of the colors available will work well.

We offer just the chart and finishing instructions separate from the Scissor/toothpick basket... the thread rings and scissors separate, and even have single pin cushion baskets as well!.

Jumping Cat from Dames of the Needle - click for more Jumping Cat
Oh, I love this little guy! He's such an antique-looking kitty jumping over an equally old & odd stack of pumpkins! I love the movement... I love the sloppy backstitches on the pumpkins -- you could just use them by themselves!

Offered as a chart, this is worked in Gentle Art hand-dyeds on Week's 35ct Straw Linen. Finishing approx 7 x 7 he's just a cute chart!

Black Cat and Star, Bow Tie Black Cat and Pumpkin Boo Picks from Dames of the Needle - click for more Black Cat and Star, Bow Tie Black Cat and Pumpkin Boo Picks
A trio of scary Halloween characters that can be finished into these cute little picks...they're perfect to poke out of a big bowl of candy corn! Offered as three small charts, each has a stitch count of 40 x 60 and are worked with hand-dyed cottons on Week's 35ct Parchment Linen.

Old and retro in feel, I love the big eyes full of surprise! Cute to finish in a million different ways -- the assembly instructions for the pics are included... all three are quick to stitch!

Miniature Wooden Hornbooks! -- click to see a more Miniature Wooden Hornbooks!
Here are two small wooden cut-outs that mimic the shape of antique hornbooks, which were used in the olden days as an alternative to a textbook in school. Papers and lessons were attached to these little 'paddles', the handles tying to students belts and such, for easy transport to and from school. Stitch something small and mount onto these.

You can have the handle at the top -- makes a cute area for an ornament hanger loop. You can have the handle at the bottom... and make a tiny sampler to display on it! They'd make fun tree ornaments, they're neat tucked inside a pretty sewing case. They'd be pretty framed in a needlework-themed shadow box... basically, there are tons of things you could do with these. No specific designs call for these... just find something cute in your stash!

Tiny one measures 1 x 1. Small one's paddle area measures a mere 2-1/2 x 2-3/4, handle is another 1 inch. Larger hornbook measures 4-3/4 x 3-1/4, with a handle of 1-1/2 inches. Too darn cute!

Mary's Etui and Accessories from Dames of the Needle - click for more Mary's Etui and Accessories
A little fabric bucket with silk drawstring bag lining... the beeskep scissor case, the pin mattress and bee fob all store inside... except that you don't want to hide them! Mary and her little lambs grace the front and sides of the fabric-covered box, with the big beeskep on the backside. Stitched in overdyeds on 32ct Lambswool Linen, the main box measures approx 3 x 3 x 6.

There are lots of special stitches scattered everywhere... and pages and pages of finishing and assembly instructions. Originally designed as a class piece only in 2007, Elizabeth is now offering this in chart format! Really, really cute! Pull your threads and the Lambswool linen and then shop for that yummy silk lining fabric.

New England Hornbook from Dames of the Needle - click for more New England Hornbook
These little paddles are just the cutest way to finish a small project. Elizabeth always has some tiny stitching on the front, and a surprise scissor and needle page on the backside. You can simply perch these on a shelf in front of a stitched piece (on an easel?) or leave off the wool on the backside and frame them. WAY COOL in a shadowbox frame with a collection of old needle packages, thread labels, bits of lace, and an old wooden hoop! New England features a courting couple and is stitched over one thread on 32ct linen with Gentle Art Sampler Threads.

Offered as the chart, it does include a rare-earth magnet to tuck into the scissor sheath, so the small scissors do not slip out. The wooden hornbook piece is available separately, as are the matte black Lil Gems scissors -- which are dinky!!! For corner buttons -- we LOVE our bags of 144 dark mother-of-pearl shell buttons from Kelmscott. Petite little buttons -- 144 in the bag for $6!

Twas Christmas Morning from Dames of the Needle - click for more Twas Christmas Morning
What a cute little set of things! Make the Tree Ruler Holder out of Weeks Juniper wool -- don't forget the tiny wool mouse!!! Add the Humbug-shaped Elf Thimble Holder, and Scissor Tag featuring stitching on one side and a wool pocket for Angel scissors on the back. The tree case is simply wool joined together -- you can see the 3-inch ruler poking out as the trunk... and the tiny mouse is just the perfect touch.

I love the scissor case; it is a flat board -- stitching over one on the front -- with the entire back a piece of weeks wool (choose any neutral color the scissors look good with, a good mouse color, and coordinates with your linen) with a Buttonhole Stitched slot, and twisted cord ties to store the scissors. Since the blades are hidden inside the case, all you see is that gold angel! A VERY creative finishing treatment for this set, it'd really be neat actually hung on the Christmas Tree as a trio of ornaments! After all, aren't hand-stitched ornaments the BEST?

Nantucket Beach from Dames of the Needle - click for more Nantucket Beach
What a charming beach scene from years and years ago! How pretty to hang in a seaside cottage setting... I want to go there!!! Stitched on 32ct Lambswool Linen in Weeks and Gentle Art overdyeds, everything is stitched in Cross Stitch -- but the people are worked over one thread, and the ladder and wheels on the bath houses are couched long stitches.

Charming old-fashioned striped swim suits, I love the soft, sandy colors and those tiny wheeled houses! Offered as a chart, this finishes approx 5 x 9.

Small Americana Hornbook from Dames of the Needle - click for more Small Americana Hornbook
I LOVE this! Mounted on our medium-sized wooden hornbook piece (just 2-1/4 x 2-3/4 in size), this is stitched over one thread on Weeks Dye Works 35ct Straw Linen in bits of overdyed floss. Lots going on in this petite piece -- the edging is Nun's Stitch to prevent raveling. The grass is Long Arm Cross -- adds texture. The stars on the flag and on the back are simply Long Stitches.

All is glued to the hornbook, and garnished with small antique shell buttons. The linen cut will be enough for both the front and back. Love, love, love that waving flag with its dusty colors! This whole thing is less than 3 x 3!!!!!!

Deer Hornbook and Scissor Case from Dames of the Needle - click for more Deer Hornbook and Scissor Case
Elizabeth Ann Talledo has another cute little hornbook just like her Maryland Sampler and Christmas Peace on Earth pieces. The cute little wooden paddle is decorated with stitching on one side (while the other two have both sides of the paddle decorated) and this design features a matching needle case. Stitched on 32ct with Sampler Threads, there is a bit of over-one stitching and Nun's and Blanket stitches garnishing the edges.

Cute and quick, offered as a chart with hornbook separate. (Note: the paddle in this pic is not available... we have the same paddles available that are featured on the Maryland and Christmas pieces -- they'll all match!)

Pumpkin Stew Scissor Case from Dames of the Needle - click for more Pumpkin Stew Scissor Case
Here's a cute little scissor sheath and fob set that holds a pair of Kelmscott's Steweb Scissors! Stitched on 32ct with overdyeds you probably have in your stash, the verse reads; 'I brew for you a pumpkin stew of scary bats and spooky cats with a spider web or two.'

Nothing too difficult or involved -- perfect to actually FINISH in time to enjoy this Fall!!! Offered as a chart, it includes a magnet to help keep the scissors nestled in the case.

Peace on Earth from Dames of the Needle - click for more Peace on Earth
Dames of the Needle has a new miniature hornbook ornament that finishes a mere 2-1/2 x 2-3/4. Both sides of the little paddle are stitched, and garnished with Just Another Button Company buttons... very simple and cute!

Although the hornbook is technically supposed to be displayed with the handle downwards... where one would hold it... to avoid having to drill holes in your paddle piece... you could always 'adapt' and hang it on the tree from the top hole in the handle! (We won't send the Cross Stitch Police after you!) Offered as the chart, stitched on 32ct linen in overdyeds... linen, hornbook and buttons (8 stars and 1 sheep) all available separately.

Maryland Hornbook from Dames of the Needle - click for more Maryland Hornbook
This is a neat design that fits onto the front and back of a miniature walnut wooden hornbook. Used as a learning tool in Colonial America, students learned daily lessons from the notes, stories and alphabets that were written on their hornbooks. (We even have a French Battledore that tells the story of a little boy and his dog, on our Dessins page!)

A charming way to display needlework, Dames of the Needle has designed a stately manor house stitched over one thread on 32ct, amidst trees of *really neat* long-stitches. Lots of sweet details on one side, flip over your 3 x 4-3/4 wooden paddle, to find small Lil Gems scissors and a few needles stored on the back.

Pretty Sampler Threads and Weeks overdyeds and a bit of Weeks Palomino for the backside, this is simply the cutest little project! We have the wooden hornbooks in three sizes... this uses the largest. Might be fun to get some of the smaller ones for other little projects, cute, quick and classy way to finish!

The Chase Casket from Finger Work - click to see more The Chase Casket from Finger Work
This is such a charming piece... Elizabeth Talledo has designed a fabric box that is covered on all sides with a busy hunter and his hound chasing the poor bunny through the countryside, and across the ponds. Inside the box, you'll find more of the scene stitched on a tiny needle roll, needle cushion and needle custodian!!

Finishing approx 3 x 4 x 9, the finishing instructions are available separately. The chart -- all 14 pages of it -- includes both over one and two stitching, and the pattern comes with three additional pages of color pictures of all aspects of the piece. I found this little ditty in the design credits... 'Also please note that at no time were any animals harmed in any of the scenes. The bunny goes on to live a very long and prosperous life, as does the dog, the swans and cygnets. There is an unconfirmed rumor that the hunter has become a vegetarian.'

Playful Day from Finger Work -- click to see a larger view Playful Day
'A peaceful day for frolic and play' is the verse on this truly unique sampler piece! I have never seen hot air balloons featured in a sampler -- it feels like this has come straight out of American History to me! Stitched on 32ct, this finishes approx 9 x 11, and is worked in Weeks and Gentle Art overdyeds.

It's full of special stitches that are tucked into the various motifs for extra texture and interest. (Ascots, sleeves, waistbands, the pond, cuffs and shoes, the leaves... that kind of thing.) I love the tiny sailboats in the pond, and the tiny balloon far away in the sky. Simply very unique... this is offered as a chart.
