WE have a nice collection of wonderful designs by Kathy Barrick of Carriage House... everything is full of deep browns, cinnamons, rusts, pretty amber-golds, dusty moss and bold forest greens.
Of special note, however are the Hawk Hollow Run pieces. A Village and Town of houses and businesses... these can be broken down into each of their individual squares, or stitched as the entire piece. Stunning!
Here's a neat piece by Carriage House's Kathy Barrick. With a stitch count of 106 x 99, it's not very large and is worked with DMC colors of 3777, 832, 3011, 677 and 310 -- NOT red, white and blue!!!!! The chart has the outline for the bell shape you'll use to finish this... and you can (break the law, I think??!) by drilling a hole through a nickel and using it as the clapper like she has!
Really a very interesting piece, *Proclaim Liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof. 1752.* Offered as the chart.
Christmas Joy Ride
Carriage House Samplings has a new Christmas design... a busy sledding scene! I remember tearing down hills on sleds at breakneck speed when we were little... so this just makes me smile! Stitched with DMC and hand-dyed flosses on just about any fabric you like best... it'll finish about 7-1/2 x 8-1/2 on a 16/32ct fabric.
Some coverlet-inspired motifs in here... pretty retro-inspired colors of aqua and DMCs 3777 dark red... wouldn't this be cute finished into a door stop block, or a big pillow trimmed with lots of different wool fabrics??? Offered as a chart.
The Village and A Hallowe'en Birthday
Carriage House's Kathy Barrick has a pair of recent releases that are kind of neat.
- The Village is a study of little village buildings all lined up perfectly and the trees 'just so!' The verse talks about nature's beauty and the gifts she shares -- they've crept over the village walls! It measures 248 x 160 stitches -- so approx 14 x 9 on 36ct. Coded for silks or DMC floss, it has a lot of visual impact because of all that repetitive balance.
- A Hallowe'en Birthday needs to be stitched for anyone born around Halloween -- but for goodness sakes make her face happy about it! This is a charming piece because it measures a mere 4-1/2 x 6 on 36ct! It is so much smaller than you'd think!
I think it'd make a charming rounded cushion as an alternative to framing. Offered as a chart, it is coded for DMC or silks... super colorful and eyecatching!!!
Kathy Barrick has a new piece -- a charming bunny -- just sitting here! I think part of the charm of the piece is all the design
repetition of all the small motifs and shapes in here. The leaves in the vine, alphabet letters and butterflies in the background, and the negative patterns in Rebecca are all basically the same size -- and they dazzle your eye and brain! Then, you get the play of the diagonals from the date block, the ground and again-- the leaves -- lots of balanced repetition in here!
Offered as a chart, Rebecca measures 106 x 153 stitches and is worked in silks or DMC flosses. Very cute piece, I think she'd make a stunning pillow (finished with some lavish silk fabrics!) perched on a guest bedroom bed.
*A Good & Proper Home*
Oh my gosh... I LOVE this! Kathy Barrick has a new piece -- it is SUPER SIMPLE in stitching -- but SUPER COOL in impact! The simple statement of fact is decorated with a pair of traditional sampler basket motifs. Only 5 colors of DMC -- 356, 829, 3829, 3777 and 310... this measures 376 x 29 stitches, which translates to 27 x 2 on 14/28 count!
What a cool housewarming or wedding gift!!! This is perfect to hang above a doorway, and I cannot think of any room that it wouldn't fit into! Quite a conversation piece, this is offered as a chart. It's a *Gotta Have!*
Oh, this is a fun piece! The alphabet sampling on the outside, the rest of the design is inside the tree -- bordered precisely. Like looking through a peep-hole, there is an entire wonderful, colorful world happening inside that tree!
Offered as a chart, this is stitched on any hand-dyed in DMC flosses. It finishes approx 6 x 8 on 14/28ct... it's just charming. Another fun 'something' that would finish into a pillow beautifully.
I love this little piece! Kathy Barrick has a neat wintery sampler -- it really doesn't scream Christmas -- so leave it out! The sleepy village scene looks like it's growing out of an elegant serving dish... and the reindeer in the sky are super-involved in their delivery tasks... I think its very pretty and unusual.
Offered as a chart, stitch it in silks or DMC -- or check out your stash of cotton hand-dyeds. Choose a carmel-ly colored fabric to go with the 422 and 612 browns. It'd make a pretty accent pillow as well.
Well this little baby is stitched on DARK linen... NOT for the faint-of-stitcher! A beautiful piece, the colors are DMC 677, 422, 939, 3031 and ecru -- all against that luscious and dramatic background.
Finishing approx 7 x 10 on 32ct, I like all of it... but I think the top section is just stunning without the bottom verse! Offered as a chart.
A Multiplying Bird
I don't know what it is about multiplication tables in old needlework... but they always catch the eye and 'scream' *charm!* Kathy Barrick has a sweet bird that she has charted on a plain background... but then added that 'educational design element'... and doesn't he look spectacular!?
Charted for either silk or DMC floss, the table measures 137 x 137 inches. Pretty browns and rusts, I have no idea what you'll do if you need to know what 6 x 7 is, but who cares!!? Offered as a chart.
The Boy Series
Abel, George, Jackson and Jeremiah... do you know anyone who loves to play in the water... ride his horse on a sunny day or play catch with the dog? Carriage House's signature design style is apparent in this set of 4 pieces. Vibrant color, simple lines, a primitive flair, each of our 4 little guys finishes approx 9-1/2 x 11-1/2 on 32ct linen and is worked in DMC floss. I think I like Jackson the best... he'd be cute in a little boy's room... but George is kind of fun too! Each is offered in separate chart format.
Cat & Mouse and October 31st from Kathy Barrick
Kathy Barrick is designing again... and has sent these two patterns! Cat & Mouse is really fun, you could stitch it as is and frame it... but wouldn't it make a neat STUFFED free-standing cat with a tiny mouse cushion attached? Stitch count is 102 x 114 -- so not terribly large -- and the chart is coded for either Needlepoint Silk or DMC.
October 31st has quite a bit of scary stuff going on in it. It, too is smallish -- approx 5 x 6 on 32ct -- and coded for silks or DMC. The animals and bats are cute, and the stack of pumpkins is really cool! She has split the oranges in each of the pumpkins -- can you see the color differences? An alternative for you might be to stitch them in a collection of different hand-dyed oranges, bronzes and rusts. Thanks for the cute new designs, Kathy!!!
More Than Luck
*According to legend, each leaf of a four-leaf clover has a special meaning; the first is for faith, the second is for hope, the third is for love and the fourth is for luck.* This endearing piece is stitched in DMC floss -- with a touch of overdyed green -- and NEEDS to be hung in the family room or be given as a housewarming gift!!! (personal opinion there!)
Charming, it is stitched on hand-dyed 28ct Tin Roof Gingham Linen and measures just 5 x 5-1/2. So simple, but what a COOL design! Offered as a single card chart, linen offered separately.
Spring at Hawk Run Hollow
A new piece to join the other 6 in the Hawk Run Hollow series by Carriage House, this one is full of color and Springtime 'busy-ness' ... and doesn't feature as many houses and buildings as some of the other designs have had. *Behold the winter is past... the fig tree puts forth its figs... Arise my love, my fair one, and come away!* A condensed version of the verse, this is a playful rendition of Springtime and all the neat things that happen when the weather turns warmer and everything wakes up after winter.
A massive stitch count of 185 x 614 delivers a finished size of 10 x 34 on 36ct!!! Each of the 12 individual blocks are presented on an individual page for ease in stitching. Coded for DMC floss or Needlepoint Inc silks, each block measures 95 x 95 stitches and CAN stand alone if you wish! I love the clipper ship and the girls who have lost their Sunday hats!
Very pretty, the chart includes a master layout chart as well, so counting that border and spacing your blocks is an accurate breeze! Model is stitched on 40ct Weeks Dye Works Straw Linen. We carry 40, 35 and 30ct in Straw... so you have OPTIONS!!!!!
Fernand from Liz Matthews
Another of Liz Matthew's printed collages of antique needlework and ads... this one features an old multiplication table superimposed with a cool postcard, some buttons and a lace panel. ALL that is printed on your cotton fabric -- all you are adding to this piece are the Lazy Daisy stitches along the left side.
Liz suggests more stitching if you are inclined... and we think adding real buttons over the printed ones would be stunning! The fabric print measures approx 9 x 11.
Comments on lingerie from Carriage House Samplings! Corset: *No man can storm the bastions of these walls!* Did you know the difference between Drawers and Pantaloons??? What a fun piece to hang in the laundry room, or a young girls bed or bathroom! Even a cute ladies boutique shop or if you're lucky -- your gigantic closet! Here is the family dog biting the laundry from the line, as well.
Just a easy piece with quite an unusual subject matter, this is stitched (on really anything you want) in DMC floss with 4 additional colors of Gentle Art Overdyed floss. It finishes approx 7-1/2 x 8 on 32ct, so it's just a perfect petite size to fit the perfect wall. So different, so cute, offered as a chart.
Ode to the Newspaper
A dying thing, those newspapers! Everyone gets their news electronically and on TV now... you hear about small newspapers closing their doors all the time. This is a charming scene... kind of celebrating all the things newspapers are used for! The umbrella on a rainy day... bringing home the smelly fish from the corner market... gee -- someone actually reading one on a neat park bench... check out the lady with the newspaper lining her birdcage! It's upside down!! And finally, the devoted paperboy peddling his daily wares.
Celebrating a time when newspapers were a fixture in our day-to-day lives, this was designed by former Washington Post art director -- Marty Barrick! Offered as a chart, it finishes approx 7 x 12-1/2 on 28ct... coded for DMC... have fun with this one!
Celebrating the small-town charm of Chincoteague Island on Virginia's eastern shore. You don't have to know the history of the area (although it is supplied on the back cover beside the DMC or silk color key) to appreciate the design elements in this piece.
Finishing approx 5 x 18 on 32ct, everyone loves the nautical theme, the lighthouse, mermaid, and of course the famous ponies featured. Charming, this is offered as a chart.
Just a bitty design that might help you to count sheep before falling asleep!!! 9 Little sheep -- all of them different -- underneath the snoring moon, this is simple and cute.
With a stitch count of 112 x 55, it is worked on Weeks 35ct Havana in either silks or DMC cottons. Offered as a single chart.
Something to appeal to the History-buff in the family, this is stitched in either silk or DMC -- 7 different colors, actually -- and finishes approx 8 x 15 on 28ct.
Simple Cross Stitch, it is offered as a chart.
The Farms of Hawk Run Hollow
We have another in the Hawk Run Hollow series! Carriage House's Kathy retired, but was dragged back into business by sister, Marty! Ms Marty designed most of this piece -- but tied Kathy to a chair till she finished her squares! The result is equally as charming as the rest of our Hawk Run Hollow pieces!
Notice the days of the week squares... something for everyday... Barn Raising on Monday, Livestock Auction on Tues, Double Yolk Wed, Sheep Shearing on Thurs, Friday Fishing, and Saturday's Dance! Finishing approx 9 x 28 on 40ct, this is coded for silks or DMC floss. Stitch the entire thing, or pick your favorite days... Marty made Kathy finish her task... you can too!
Meeting House Hill
Originally published in 2003, this came from *vault cleaning* on Marty and Tim's part. He decided to do a wall of older patterns at Market... and we found this one!
Approx half of this is stitched over one thread, and with a stitch count of 150 x 50... better choose something you can SEE! You can even stain stitch those boat sails if you want! Definitely a good design... enjoy the resurrection!
No publishing date on this one... it might be new...might be old! I don't care -- I think it's totally eye-catching, and a fun, quick stitch! *There is Magic in the Air*
Stitch this on black -- the words, cat, house and Jack's faces aren't stitched AT ALL! Half of this is already done... and you didn't have to do it! Stitch count of 60 x 60... on 10ct this is 6 x 6, on 40, it's 1-1/2 x 1-1/2!!!!! Offered as a single chart page.
Autumn at Hawk Run Hollow
Carriage House's 5th set of scenes all around the village of Hawk Run Hollow is here! Celebrating Autumn, it covers the harvest season, Halloween, and Thanksgiving. Joining Houses, Village, Shores and Christmas... Kathy says this is her last HRH set. We stood together in her booth at Market... all 5 of them were there on display, just stunning!
Just like all the rest, this piece features 12 squares of designs, that can be stitched individually or together. Every single panel
is neat... it's kind of fun to look at the set of patterns and TRY top choose your favorites! Autumn is stitched in a different configuration than the rest, so linen has been ordered.
Charted for silks or DMC floss... 40ct Sand Dune Linen cut is also available. Offered as the chart, all other HRH charts are still available!
Christmas at Hawk Run Hollow
Carriage House has released her next Hawk Run Hollow piece, joining Village, Houses and Shores of HRH! A stunning 12-part piece... just like the other three... each section can stand alone and is a lovely piece all by itself! EVERY square in this design is neat... lots of bold color and subject... the houses, trees, carolers, skating pond, singing cardinals and church scene are all endearing! LOTS of stitching in this, it finishes approx 17 x 23 on 32ct!
Charted for DMC flosses or Needlepoint Silks, the piece uses 119 colors!!! (So to save yourself approx $360... choose the floss!) I'm trying to choose my favorite section, and i *think* it's the skating pond... but I like those singing birds... ! Offered as a chart... linen and threads separately.
The Village of Hawk Run Hollow|
The sequel to Carriage House's Houses of Hawk Run Hollow... this is a MUST HAVE! "Over the river on a hill lieth a village sweet and still. All around it the forest and the trees shiver and whisper in the breeze. Over it sailing shadows go of soaring hawk and screaming crow. And mountain grasses low and sweet grow in the middle of every street." A set of 8 houses, there is a school, church, town hall, blacksmith, gristmill, the inn, parks, and even the graveyard!!! Such a neat, colonial/antique flavor, this is just stunning. Stitch count for this incredible piece is a whopping 278 x 371, which means that on 32ct, this will finish approx 17 x 23!
You can stitch the entire village, or just choose a few of your favorites and arrange them however you want... lots of neat choices here. The chart includes one huge master sheet of all for placement, with each individual block on a single, separate sheet of paper, so you can carry just the chart you're working on, and leave the rest safely tucked away till you need them.
Containing 56 luscious colors of Needlepoint Silks, this is converted to DMC floss as well, and will require a total of 62 skeins of thread. Bricks and bronzes, greens of every shade, golden mustards and cinnamon browns, weathered blues, the list just goes on and on! So... check into your DMC stash, or treat yourself to the silks!!! (We have them all ready for you!) Note: The 40ct linen specified in this piece will most likely be unavailable for several months. Study the chart a bit to decide if there is another you'd like to use.
The Houses of Hawk Run Hollow
This is a commanding design that features 12 smaller design panels that can be worked individually or together, in any number of shapes and formats. Each block measures approx 5 inches square on 36ct linen, making this entire piece a whopping 20-1/2 x 15- 1/2 on 36ct linen, that is almost all solid stitching. Luscious colors of russets, greens, buttermilks, teals, bricks, and cinnamons, this is charted for DMC or Silk. (Silk set contains 59 skeins!)
I love houses... so think this is charming. However, in reading the very traditional sampler-themed words... I find that I personally would change them to read something much more lighthearted, like 'the road to a friend's house is never long!!!' The piece deals with 'Remembering Me' but then mentions rotting bones, etc, etc....! Anyway, it is truly a lovely piece... full of cool houses and other sampler motifs, even though it is on the high end price-wise!
Silver Needle hosted a wonderful Trunk Show of Carriage House's stitched pieces -- 59 of them -- for the month of July! (This show also included designs from Hands to Work... we'll have those up in another day or two.) We've carried some of these designs for years, but never had the opportunity to hold the models in our hands, and really LOOK at them! Wow... what a talented lady Kathy Barrick is!
I can't begin to describe 59 different designs... and I don't think we even photographed all of them... but here's a tempting smattering of our show!!! Exquisite pieces, deep, primitive colors, cross stitch samplers and cool punch needle.
The Birds & The Bees

New Carriage House Samplings have arrived... along with another 80-piece Trunk Show! Lots of pretty models on display in the shop till the end of September... these are only three of the group!
Lovely things, each is presented as the chart, and stitched in either silks or DMC flosses. A Lady's Garden is presented on two different linen colors -- what a difference that can make! If a trip into the shop isn't possible... a trip down our Carriage House Sampling page is the next best thing!
A Friendship Sampler
Wow... this is such a unique piece that is a tribute to your group of friends or family!!! This is a chart that offers so much versatility, that no two of this design will be stitched alike!!! Finishing approx 17 x 17 on 28ct... pick the fabric of your choice... and work with the Crescent Colours Belle Soie Silks to honor all your friends, family members, or members of your guild or group!
Charter members, siblings, cousins, *lottery winners* -- PICK YOUR GROUP and celebrate it in stitches!!! Make it larger or smaller... depending on the group... everyone is celebrated with a different little heart, and their name. What a cool time capsule... what a neat tribute to a community of lives... I'd love to meet Chickie Cobb!!!
As Life Wears Away
OK... we're wishing for wiser days as we get older! The Bargello and colors in this are lovely!
A beautiful, miniature study in sampler motifs... has a Quaker feel to
it. One model is done in Navy Blue... choose your favorite color -- especially an overdyed! Finishes 11 x 11 on 28ct.
Acorns & Threads
Exquisite over one... do just half... it's charted both ways. Lovely detailed acorns and Double Running Stitches. Entire thing is 6 x 9 on 32ct.
Honeycomb & Flower Garden
Wow... this model is eye-catching! Pic is stitched on black in cinnamons and golds. Then they've also shown you the basket itself, stitched in taupes on light-colored linen on the back of the chart. I thought it was a
completely different design at first!!!!! Lovely!
